Vehicle Sideslip Angle Estimation: A Review

Vehicle sideslip angle estimation is of great importance to the vehicle stability control as it could not be measured directly by ordinary vehicle-mounted sensors. As a result, researchers worldwide have carried out comprehensive research in estimating the vehicle sideslip angle. First, as the attitude would affect the acceleration information measured by the IMU directly, different kinds of vehicle attitude estimation methods with multi-sensor fusion are presented. Then, the estimation algorithms of the vehicle sideslip angle are classified into the following three aspects: kinematic model based method, dynamic model based method, and fusion method. The characteristics of different estimation algorithms are also discussed. Finally, the conclusion and development trend of the sideslip angle estimation are prospected.

Analysis under Vehicle-Pedalcyclist Risk Scenario Based on Comparison between Real Accident and Naturalistic Driving Data

This paper constructs the Accident Crash Scenarios(ACSs) classification system based on the traffic accident data collected by the traffic management department in a Chinses city from 2013 to 2015. The classification system selects four influenced variables on the basis of Critical Driving Scenarios(CDSs) in Naturalistic Driving Data. The proportions of each variable are analyzed, and all ACSs are divided into 48 scenarios. The highest proportion of nine ACSs are extracted from all 10596 ACSs, and the result shows the ACSs involved Car-Pedalcyclist occupy the top four scenarios, and the scenarios involved intersection situations are worth attention. Pedalcyclists include bicyclists, motorcyclists, tri-cyclists and electric bicyclists. Multivariate Logistic Regression(MLR) analysis is then used to study the ACSs involved the type of Car-Pedalcyclist.

Development of Composite Brake Pedal Stroke Simulator for Electro-Hydraulic Braking System

A brake pedal stroke simulator for Electro-hydraulic Braking System (EHBS) was developed to ensure the comfort braking pedal feel for the brake-by-wire system. An EHBS with an integrated master cylinder was proposed, and a composite brake pedal stroke simulator was designed for the EHBS, which was comprised of two inline springs and a third parallel one. A normally closed solenoid valve was used to connect the master cylinder booster chamber and the stroke simulator. The suitable brake pedal stroke was achieved by three stages of these springs' compression, whereas the solenoid valve was shutdown to enable mechanical control of the service brakes when electrical faults appeared.

Research into Autoignition Characteristics of Diesel Fuel in a Controllable Active Thermo-Atmosphere

A novel method is applied to analysis the autoignition phenomenon. Experiments on the study of autoignition characteristics of diesel fuel were carried out with a Controllable Active Thermo-Atmosphere Combustor. The results show that the method for autoignition studying of liquid fuel is of feasibility. Autoignition delay time and autoignition height from the nozzle increase with the coflow temperature decreasing and autoignition delay time changes sensitively under lower coflow temperature. Liftoff height of diesel spray flame decreases with the increasing of coflow temperature. Lower temperature causes higher variance of liftoff height. It might be speculated that there are two different mechanisms of flame stabilization that the lower lift-off heights flames are related to a balance between the flow velocity and flame speed while the higher lift-off heights flames are stabilized by the mixture autoignition.

As the connectivity of vehicles increases rapidly, more vehicles have the capability to communicate with each other. Because Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks (VANETs) have the characteristics of solid mobility and decentralization, traditional security strategies such as authentication, firewall, and access control are difficult to play an influential role. As a soft security method, trust management can ensure the security attributes of VANETs. However, the rapid growth of newly encountered nodes of the trust management system also increases the requirements for trust establishing mechanisms. Without a proper trust establishment mechanism, the trust value of the newly encountered nodes will deviate significantly from its actual performance, and the trust management system will suffer from newcomer attacks.

Intelligent Cockpit Operation System: Indirect Rotary Transducer for an Automotive Screen Interface

Indirect rotary transducer for an automotive screen interface is an innovative solution for the smart cockpit. The primary objective of this study is to design an indirect rotary transducer system, and study its feasibility in the smart cockpit. The working theory of this designed system is that the magnetic induction hall electronic chip can detect changes in the magnetic field. Several tests have been conducted, which show that the hypothesis of dangling operating system achieves the same effect as a hard-wired operating system. The results of the experiment indicate that the magnetic induction hall sensor can meet the specification of traditional hard-wired operating system. This system is a good concept for intelligent cab driving, which can fully meet the needs of the current market.

Crashworthiness Optimization of Hydraulic Excavator Cab Roof Rail and Safety Prediction: Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Validation

Off-road trucks, tractors and earth-moving machines are at high risk of accidents involving falling objects or rollovers. Therefore, these machines need proper protective structures to protect operators. This study investigates the crashworthiness optimization of a hydraulic excavator cab roof rail based on an improved bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method considering two different load cases (a lateral quasi-static load and an impact load from the top of cab, respectively). In the crashworthiness optimization problem, a weighted summation of external works done by the two different load cases is treated as the objective function while the volume of design domain is treated as the constraint. A mutative weight scheme is proposed to stabilize the optimization and balance the two load cases. Finite element (FE) model is established and two prototypes are fabricated based on the optimal design.

A Systematic Scenario Typology for Automated Vehicles Based on China-FOT

To promote the development of automated vehicles (AVs), large scale of field operational tests (FOTs) were carried out around the world. Applications of naturalistic driving data should base on correlative scenarios. However, most of the existing scenario typologies, aiming at advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) and extracting discontinuous fragments from driving process, are not suitable for AVs, which need to complete continuous driving tasks. In this paper, a systematic scenario-typology consisting of four layers (from top to bottom: trip, cluster, segment and process) was first proposed. A trip refers to the whole duration from starting at initial parking space to parking at final one. The basic units ‘Process’, during which the vehicle fulfils only one driving task, are classified into parking process, long-, middle- and short-time-driving-processes. A segment consists of two neighboring long-time-driving processes and a middle or/and short one between them.

Studies on Impact Performance of Gradient Lattice Structure Applied to Crash Box

The conventional crash box with thin-walled column conceals some limitations on pedestrian protection and lightweight. The metallic NPR metamaterials designed in this study are based on re-entrant lattice structures. Re-entrant structures are known to be one main class of axenic structures that display negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR), which can be manufactured by 3D printing technology. This kind of metamaterial has good designability and can be used as the filling structure of the crash box to improve the crashworthiness of the car. This paper starts from the relations between geometric parameters of the metamaterial. Considering the deformation characteristics of the crash box, the structure were designed into some gradient types. The mechanical properties of different gradient structures under the same impact conditions were compared to find the proper gradient structures. Based on the studies, the gradient lattice structure is applied to the automobile crash box.

Analysis of Discretization for Transient Impact Loads on Door Closing

The transient impact load generated by door closing is used as the input of the closing condition, which is an important part of door system investigation. In this article, the basic theory of transfer path analysis (TPA) is introduced to handle the abnormal vibration of the front-left door with the glass down stall position of a certain vehicle during the closure. The transient impact loads are discretized under the closed door and obtained using the inverse matrix (IM) method in TPA. Vehicle test and bench test are conducted. The closed door is subjected to the transient impact loads of the sealing strip and the latch on the body side. In the vehicle test, acceleration sensors are pasted on the target point and the reference point on the door to obtain the acceleration vibration response upon the door closure.

Investigation of PEM Fuel Cell Degradation Under On-Off Cyclic Condition

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has attracted extensive attention in recent years because of its high efficiency and zero emission. Although fuel cell technology has made great progress, durability is still the bottleneck of its large-scale commercialization. In order to systematically study the degradation of fuel cell system for transportation applications, we selected the most severe operating condition - on-off cyclic condition as the research object, and focused on the influence of cell temperature and air relative humidity on the degradation rate of fuel cell by means of polarization curve, reference voltage and CV. The results show that with the same temperature, the fuel cell performance degradation rate first decreases and then increases with the decrease of humidity, which may be due to the increase of platinum ion transfer rate at high relative humidity and the dry membrane at low relative humidity.

A Comparative Study on Energy Management Strategies for an Automotive Range-Extender Electric Powertrain

In this work, the influences of various real-timely available energy management strategies on vehicle fuel consumption (VFC) and energy flow of a range-extender electric vehicle were studied The strategies include single-point, multi-point, speed-following, and equivalent consumption minimization strategy. In addition, the dynamic programming method which cannot be used in real time, but can provide the optimal solution for a known drive situation was used for comparison. VFCs and energy flow characteristics with different strategies under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) were obtained through computer modeling, and the results were verified experimentally on a range-extender test bench. The experimental results are consistent with the modeled ones in general with a maximum deviation of 4.11%, which verifies the accuracy of the simulation models.

Specifically, in the context of the current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, which has caused great obstacles to normal logistics and transportation, personnel exchanges and information communication, platforms that can support global operation are significant for product testing and validation, because they eliminate the need for the transportation of personnel and equipment. Therefore, the establishment of a distributed test and validation platform for automotive powertrain systems, which can integrate software and hardware testing, is important in terms of both scientific research and industrialization.

Temperature Difference Control Strategy and Flow Field Uniformity Analysis of Ni-Mh Power Battery Package

The nonuniformity property of the temperature field distribution will not only affect on the battery charging and discharging performance but also its lifetime. In this paper the elementary structural design is implemented for Ni-Mh battery package and the corresponding test platform is constructed from the point of view of temperature difference control strategy, the test results show that the present structural design schemes can effectively restrain temperature difference enlargement among the battery stacks. Through the application of adopting the flow field uniformity method to control temperature difference, and flow field optimization inside the battery package, it is found that the flow field velocity change quantity ΔV is gradually reduced as the increase of the afflux hood angle Ak and air vent width Da, and the difference of battery temperature is relatively lower, which denoting that the corresponding relationship can be created based on test data.

Numerical Study of Gas Purge in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

A three-dimensional two-phase single-channel purge mode of proton exchange membrane fuel cell was established, and the steady-state and purge process were simulated. The water distribution in fuel cell after steady-state operation was studied. The changing trend of water content and water volume fraction under co-flow/counter-flow purge conditions was also studied. The results show that the membrane water content and water volume fraction under the ridge position of the fuel cell is more than the flow channel. The non-uniform distribution of membrane water along the direction of the flow channel is significant in co-flow, and the difference can be up to 6. In addition, the effects of different working conditions on purge were studied. It was found that in the purge condition, the water content of the inner membrane of 120s could be basically reduced to below 3.

Lane Marking Detection for Highway Scenes based on Solid-state LiDARs

Lane marking detection plays a crucial role in Autonomous Driving Systems or Advanced Driving Assistance System. Vision based lane marking detection technology has been well discussed and put into practical application. LiDAR is more stable for challenging environment compared to cameras, and with the development of LiDAR technology, price and lifetime are no longer an issue. We propose a lane marking detection algorithm based on solid-state LiDARs. First a series of data pre-processing operations were done for the solid-state LiDARs with small field of view, and the needed ground points are extracted by the RANSAC method. Then, based on the OTSU method, we propose an approach for extracting lane marking points using intensity information.

A Potential Field Based Lateral Planning Method for Autonomous Vehicles

As one of the key technologies in autonomous driving, the lateral planning module guides the lateral movement during the driving process. An integrated lateral planning module should consider the non-holonomic constraints of a vehicle, the optimization of the generated trajectory and the applicability to various scenarios. However, the current lateral planning methods can only meet parts of these requirements. In order to satisfy all the performance requirements above, a novel Potential Field (PF) based lateral planning method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a PF model is built to describe the potential risk of the traffic entities, including the obstacles, road boundaries and lines. The potential fields of these traffic entities are determined by their properties and the traffic regulations. Secondly, the planning algorithm is presented, which comprises three modules: state prediction, state search and trajectory generation.

Chinese National projects “13th Five Year Plan” and “Made in China 2025” have both put forward a goal of developing Intelligent and Connected Vehicles(ICV). Shanghai is a typical city of automobile industry which spearhead the development of China’s ICV industry. After the adjustment and transition of industrial structure, Shanghai has initially formed the industrialization layout of ICV covering core areas including environmental perception, intelligent decision-making, actuator, human-computer interaction and vehicle integration. However, currently Shanghai is still in the beginning stage and there exists a large gap with world advanced level in both the core technology and marketization. This article is based on former qualitative survey combined with quantitative analysis which uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) method to objectively evaluate the status quo and development trend of Shanghai’s ICV.

Longitudinal Planning and Control Method for Autonomous Vehicles Based on A New Potential Field Model

An integrated automatic driving system consists of perception, planning and control. As one of the key components of an autonomous driving system, the longitudinal planning module guides the vehicle to accelerate or decelerate automatically on the roads. A complete longitudinal planning module is supposed to consider the flexibility to various scenarios and multi-objective optimization including safety, comfort and efficiency. However, most of the current longitudinal planning methods can not meet all the requirements above. In order to satisfy the demands mentioned above, a new Potential Field (PF) based longitudinal planning method is presented in this paper. Firstly, a PF model is constructed to depict the potential risk of surrounding traffic entities, including obstacles and roads. The shape of each potential field is closely related to the property of the corresponding traffic entity.

Prediction of Bus Passenger Flow Based on CEEMDAN-BP Model

The prediction of passenger flow is of great significance to facilitate the decision-making processes for local authorities and transport operators to provide an effective bus scheduling. In this work, a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) was adopted to predict the bus passenger flow. To reduce the prediction error and improve the prediction accuracy, a combined model CEEMDAN-BP, which combines CEEMDAN (Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise) method and BPNN, has been proposed. CEEMDAN is an improved method based on EEMD, which has been widely applied to signal smoothing and de-noising. Experimental results show that this combined model can exactly achieve an excellent prediction effect and improve the prediction accuracy of the network greatly.
